While many politically involved conservatives were focused on Biden’s Red Chinese balloon
scandal another kind of disaster is quietly creeping up on the United States – Congress appears ready to drop a massive spending debt bomb on American taxpayers, and over half of the Republicans in the Senate appear to be ready to go along with it.
As our friend Stephen Moore reported in the weekend edition of his must-read Committee to Unleash Prosperity Hotline, 24 GOP Senators signed a letter saying “no debt ceiling increase without budget cuts.”
Reported Mr. Moore:
“We do not intend to vote for a debt-ceiling increase without structural reforms to address current and future fiscal realities and manage out-of-control government policies,” warns the letter to president Biden and sponsored by Mike Lee of Utah.
Fantastic. We couldn’t have said it better ourselves. Why didn’t EVERY Republican in the Senate sign?
The only way Biden can sustain his hissy-fit that he won’t negotiate any spending cuts or budget reforms on the debt ceiling is if Republicans show they are disunited. Sue enough. That’s what they are doing, and it doesn’t help when the Senate minority leader, Mitch McConnell, isn’t on board.
Shame on these 25 surrender monkeys who refused to sign and are threatening to side with the Democrats big spenders.
We’re trying to figure out how any Republican who ran as a fiscal conservative could disagree with and fail to sign the Mike Lee letter, which said in part:
Our nation's fiscal policy is a disaster. Our country owes $31 trillion, a level of debt that now well exceeds the size of our economy. Inflation is making life more expensive for American families every single day. Meanwhile, you administration is directing federal agencies to continue to spend billions in taxpayer resources, expanding the size and scope of the IRS to go after families and small businesses, policing the speech of Americans on social media, funding equity programs in the military, and pouring money into programs for a pandemic that your administration has declared over.
Americans are keenly aware that their government is not only failing to work for them - but actively working against them. We do not intend to vote for a debt-ceiling increase without structural reforms to address current and future fiscal realities, actually enforce the budget and spending rules on the books, and manage out-of-control government policies.

The only name on the list of those not signing the Mike Lee letter that really surprised us was Senator Josh Hawley of Missouri, the rest of the list comprise pretty much the same allegedly Republican Senators who always vote with Mitch McConnell and always cave on spending and the debt limit.
Note the crossover between the list of Senators below who voted for the $1.7 trillion omnibus and those listed above who declined to sign the Mike Lee letter.
Blunt, Inhofe, Portman and Shelby are all gone, after choosing not to run for reelection in 2022, and it was gratifying to see that their replacements signed the Mike Lee letter demanding spending cuts be part of the debt ceiling package.
